GO SPURS GO | |

| Los Angeles (12-14) at San Antonio (14-10) Game info: 8:30 pm EST Mon Dec 21, 2009 TV: FSPT, FSSW By Matt Beardmore
While the San Antonio Spurs have struggled against teams with winning records, they have taken care of nearly every sub-.500 foe.
The Spurs look to continue that trend Monday night when they go for their 14th straight victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.
San Antonio (14-10) improved to 12-1 against teams currently at .500 or worse with Saturday’s 100-99 victory over Indiana. Tim Duncan had his shot blocked by Roy Hibbert but got the rebound and dunked it over the Pacers center with 4.6 seconds left as the Spurs rallied from a 13-point fourth quarter deficit to open their three-game homestand.
“I wanted to try to take it to the glass and see what happens, and Hibbert made a very good defensive play,” Duncan said after scoring 19 points and matching a season high with 16 rebounds.
Duncan, who is averaging 26.7 points and 15.0 boards in his last three games, scored 21 points and led six Spurs in double-figures in a 115-90 win over the host Clippers on Dec. 13—San Antonio’s 13th straight victory in this matchup.
“As has been all season, Tim Duncan is our most consistent player,” Gregg Popovich said Saturday after becoming the 16th coach to win 700 NBA games, but just the third (Jerry Sloan in Utah and Red Auerbach in Boston) to win that many contests with one team. “He’s been fantastic.”
While San Antonio is 2-9 against teams with winning records, it has a chance to continue its push up the Western Conference standings—eight of its next 11 games are against .500 or worse teams.
The Spurs also have won 13 straight at home versus the Clippers since a 91-87 loss Jan. 31, 2002.
Los Angeles, which hasn’t beaten a team currently with a winning record since a 106-99 victory over Denver on Nov. 20, hasn’t beaten San Antonio since a 98-85 victory March 7, 2006.
The Clippers (12-14) continue their six-game trip following Saturday’s 112-107 overtime win over Philadelphia. After letting a 20-point lead slip away in Friday’s 95-91 defeat in New York, Los Angeles squandered a 16-point, third-quarter lead and nearly fell to the 76ers as Andre Iguodala’s buzzer-beater was waved off at the end of regulation.
Los Angeles, which has won three of four, held Philadelphia to one basket in the opening 4:49 of overtime.
“(We knew) the first team to make that run was going to win the game,” Al Thornton said after the Clippers improved to 2-1 on their trip.
Chris Kaman posted his fourth double-double in five games Saturday with 24 points and 11 rebounds. He had 19 and 10 in the Dec. 13 loss to San Antonio.
Coming off the bench, Baron Davis led the Clippers with 20 points and six assists in that contest. He missed both losses in San Antonio last season due to injuries.
Tony Parker led the Spurs with 18 points in Los Angeles’ last visit to AT&T Center - a 111-98 San Antonio victory March 27. Parker has shot just 29.2 percent and averaged 12.0 points in his last two home games.
The Spurs are 41-4 against the Clippers since Dec. 10. 1997.

| Tof 94, Dave, vous avez raison, les gars. . | |

| Parker leads Spurs to 103-87 win over Clippers
Tony Parker scored 19 points and Roger Mason Jr. helped give the San Antonio Spurs a decided bench advantage Monday night in a 103-87 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.
Parker, who was 7 of 11 from the field, had eight points in a decisive third-quarter run as the Spurs extended an 11-point halftime lead to 21 entering the fourth.
Mason finished with 12 points, including 10 in a 9:40 stretch of the second quarter, as San Antonio’s reserves outscored their Los Angeles counterparts 41-27.
For the first time since Nov. 19, that bench group included Antonio McDyess, replaced in the Spurs’ starting lineup by rookie DeJuan Blair. McDyess totaled 10 points and six rebounds, while Blair had eight points and six boards.
The Spurs, who had seven players score in double figures, defeated the Clippers for the second time in eight days, the 14th consecutive time overall and the 14th straight meeting in San Antonio.
Chris Kaman had a double-double a minute into the third quarter and wound up with 23 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Clippers.
The Spurs took command with a 15-2 run to end the first. Keith Bogans started it with a pair of 3-pointers, and McDyess capped it with a 17-foot baseline jumper at the buzzer.
Kaman and Eric Gordon kept the Clippers competitive in the second period. Gordon’s back-to-back 3-pointers closed the Spurs’ lead to 39-35, and Kaman had eight points and seven rebounds in the quarter, giving him 15 and nine for the half.
But San Antonio regained most of the 14-point lead it carried into the period. Mason scored 10 points and Parker capped an 11-point half with a 17-foot jumper with 28.5 seconds remaining that gave the Spurs a 57-46 edge at the break.
Los Angeles started strong in the third period as well but drew no closer than 59-52 before the Spurs broke the game open. San Antonio closed the quarter on a 17-4 run, then scored the first four points in the fourth.
Rasual Butler had 18 points for the Clippers. Baron Davis totaled 11 points and six assists

| Spurs' Parker: I've got to be myself Mike Monroe
After a few games in which he had tried to be a pass-first point guard, Tony Parker decided there was a better way to run the Spurs offense: His old way.
“At the end of the day I just have be myself and be aggressive,” said the three-time All-Star. “The last few games I was trying to pass. Then the coach tells me, no, you have to be aggressive. So it's back like my rookie year: No, pass ... no, shoot.”
In just 26:33 minutes of Monday's 103-87 blowout victory over the Clippers, Parker took only 11 shots, but they produced a team-high 19 points. He made seven shots and got to the foul line for seven free throws, making five.
It was his highest output in six games, and Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was thrilled.
“For us to be as good as we can be, Tony's got to be at the top of his game,” Popovich said. “It's always been that way, and it always will be.
“I thought Tony looked fresher and more aggressive. He was more communicative tonight and did a good job running the show.”
Parker's attempt to re-discover his inner aggressor had begun in Saturday's game against the Indiana Pacers. What he failed to re-discover then was his shooting stroke. He made only 4-of-17 shots, scoring 15.
“Tonight I felt a lot better,” he said. “Even last game, although I didn't shoot the ball well, at least I was aggressive. That's what I have to do. Pop wanted me to be more aggressive and pointed out I was not being myself and not playing well enough. I always respond.
“It's always better to be yourself when you play, so I'm definitely going to be more aggressive and you're going to be seeing more of the old Tony Parker now.”
Bonner update: Center-forward Matt Bonner on Monday got another X-ray of the fractured fourth metacarpal on his right hand and the photos showed only a small crack in the bone.
Dr. David Schmidt, one of the team's physicians, said the timetable for Bonner's return remains “about four weeks.”
“It's early in the season,” Schmidt said, “so there's no reason to change that. The X-ray today showed it is, literally, just a crack.”
Worth noting: Parker's game-high 19 points snapped a streak of four consecutive games in which Tim Duncan had led the Spurs in scoring. Duncan played only 24 minutes and 56 seconds and took only eight shots. He made five and scored 13 points ... Roger Mason Jr. continued to show off his Parker-like game going to the basket. The Spurs' top 3-point shooter last season, Mason missed his only long-range attempt against the Clippers, but scored on two slick drives that required getting the ball over either 7-footer Chris Kaman or 6-11 Marcus Camby, a former Defensive Player of the Year.

| Post Game Quotes (Clippers Game)
Coach Gregg Popovich
On changing up the starting lineup - “We wanted to change it. With Matty (Bonner) gone we wanted to get a little more shooting and spread the offense off the bench. With him and Manu off the bench, it worked well. It gave DeJuan a chance to play with the starters and be in a good situation.”
On DeJuan Blair’s defense of Chris Kaman - “He’s learning with guys that big, he has to do work to get them off their spot and stay between them and the basket. He has to use his size and body to keep them off the sweet spot so to speak.”
On the play of Tony Parker - “He looked fresher and more aggressive. He was more communicative tonight. He did a good job of running the show. For us, Tony has to be at the top of his game. It’s always been that way and always will be.”
Theo Ratliff
On his low post moves tonight - I had a little bit back in the day. I have just been watching Tim doing his little running hooks and getting his mid range game together. You are never too old to learn.”
On the bench stepping up in absence of Matt Bonner and Michael Finley - “You look at the guys on the bench – I mean, look at me, I haven’t been playing and this is my 15th year. I’ve been a starter; I’ve been an All-Star and all of those things. I’ve learned from the older guys that have been around me like Otis Thorpe – they have always stayed ready no matter. I just try to stay ready and help the young guys like DeJuan and help him continue to grow his game and understand what is going on the floor. And when I get the opportunity, I always keep myself ready. I know when that opportunity comes you have to ready when you get minutes. I’m here and I’m ready.”
On DeJuan Blair - “He is a force. He is short for his position but he is so stout. Those guys like that always gave me problems because they can get in big guys legs, keep you away from the basket and bother you when you jump up to shoot. He is a force down there and has an incredible nose for the ball. He is a consummate rookie.”
DeJuan Blair
On getting the start and foul trouble - “I felt good. I felt real good. And then the three fouls must made me feel dumb. I have learned from it and the coaches said just play your game and to move my feet. I didn’t even look at Pop after my fouls and just ran down the court. I am getting more comfortable, playing hard and doing all of the little stuff. Everything is going to be a lot work.”
On the Spurs team - “We all as a team are getting more comfortable and everyone is just playing. We keep getting more comfortable and used to each other we are going to be a pretty good team. We aren’t there yet but we just have to keep fighting and keep doing what we do. I’m feeling good and getting comfortable.”
Mike Dunleavy
On the second half - “I thought we started the third quarter out okay, but then we had a couple plays that went against us. There was that fast break by Eric Gordon where we thought he got fouled by Duncan. It kinda put him off-kilter there for a couple shots. Their bigs control the paint for them and they make shots from the outside. Between Parker pick-and-rolls and dribble penetration by Ginobili, it puts a lot of pressure on your defense. I don’t think we did as good a job in the second half.”
On the matchup issues in the paint - “From Marcus’s standpoint there was a lot of effort. In the first half there was a small lineup on the floor, so he didn’t play as many minutes as he normally plays. DJ came in but unfortunately he didn’t give us what we needed to get. You just gotta keep working and get better.”
On his postgame speech to the team - “Same thing. These games on the road are tough games and you gotta play for 48 minutes against this team and the team we play tomorrow night. In the first quarter we made some changes going to the bench and then we’re down 14. In some of these games where it’s tighter competition, our starters are going to have to play bigger minutes.”
On turnovers - “They’re a good defensive team…very solid…a lot of veterans…good athletes. They’ll make you pay the price if you turn the ball over.”
Baron Davis
On their performance in the third quarter - “I think they got to the line while we didn‘t and when they were aggressive we settled for jumpers and turned the ball over and on the road you just can‘t do that.”
On how this game compares with their match up against Utah - “Yeah, this is a good team. They‘re an experienced team, a smart basketball team and they schooled us. Utah taught us a lesson on how to play team ball, team defense, and that‘s why they were able to beat us.”
On Ginobili and Mason coming off the bench for the Spurs - “Man that was tough. We were doing a good job by staying close and staying in the game but that bench came in and really made an impact. We have to find ways when we make our runs to sustain it and keep chipping at it until the end. That‘s the most important thing when you‘re on the road and that‘s to just stay close.”
Chris Kaman
On the overall game - “We came out ok, it was a back and forth game, just late in the first we just slipped a little bit while in the second quarter we came back and played a little better. Third quarter we played ok but fourth quarter we couldn‘t finish as that has been the sum of our season so far. We‘ve had some games that we‘ve played well and today wasn‘t one of them. The Spurs are a good team, they have great veterans who know how to play the game and they do a great job. They have great bench players as well and unfortunately we just didn‘t have it in us tonight.”
On their performance in the third quarter - “Yeah I thought we came out and played solid right away as we had some good runs and stops. A part of basketball is about ups and downs, mistakes and who does it more or less, as we just didn’t do enough things right to win the game. When you get close like that it’s very frustrating to let them keep coming back at you. Like I said they’re a great basketball club and Popovich does a great job as his guys know how to play the game. ”
